Thanksgiving in Joshua Tree: A Different Kind of Holiday Tradition

Thanksgiving in Joshua Tree has a different rhythm. November brings gentler days, beautiful afternoon light and cool evenings that make it easy to linger over dinner. Beyond the windows, the desert is quiet. Inside, there’s coffee brewing, something in the oven and the people you came to spend time with.

You can keep the traditions that matter: the family recipes, the good dishes, the second slice of pie. A few days in the desert simply give them a little more room. There’s time for a walk before breakfast, a long conversation while dinner cooks and a morning afterward with nowhere you need to be.

A Thanksgiving weekend with room to slow down

Cook together, and stay at the table

Bring the recipes everyone asks for each year, divide up the cooking and let dinner be the day’s main event. A home with an open kitchen makes the preparations part of the visit, with someone chopping, someone tasting and someone keeping the conversation going.

Plan the menu before you arrive, shop ahead of the holiday and ask us about any cookware you’ll need for a particular dish. An earlier dinner can leave time to enjoy the outdoor table while the light is still warm, then bring dessert inside when the temperature drops.

Let a private chef take care of dinner

If your favorite part of Thanksgiving is sitting down together, a private chef is a lovely way to make more space for that. Cocoon’s local team can help connect you with an in-home chef and coordinate the details. Reach out early for holiday availability.

Make a little time for Joshua Tree National Park

A morning among the boulders is a good counterpoint to an afternoon in the kitchen. Keep it simple: a short walk at Cap Rock, a picnic or a drive through the park with a few stops along the way. Save a longer outing for another day if dinner needs your attention.

The park can be busy over Thanksgiving, so start early and leave some flexibility in the plan. Bring water and layers, and check current park conditions before setting out. Our guide to scenic drives near Joshua Tree is a useful place to begin.

End the evening around the fire

Once the plates are cleared, take a blanket outside and let the conversation carry on around the fire pit. At homes with a hot tub, a soak can be a good way to finish the day. November nights can be cold, which is part of the pleasure of returning to a warm house.

Four Cocoon homes for Thanksgiving in Joshua Tree and the High Desert

The right house makes gathering feel easy. These four stays offer different ways to spend the holiday, from a two-home compound for the extended family to a smaller table with desert views.

Masseria Morongo — bring the whole family

Desert gardens and the path between the homes at Masseria Morongo

Masseria Morongo brings Solara and Sylvestre together on five private acres in Morongo Valley. Booked as a pair, the homes sleep up to 16 across six bedrooms. For a large family Thanksgiving, the appeal is both practical and beautiful: two full kitchens with Bosch appliances, separate living rooms and a 16-foot outdoor dining table where everyone can sit down together.

A short path connects the homes, so the group can share meals while still having room to retreat. Sliding doors open onto shaded patios, outdoor lounges and mountain views. Built-in barbecues, Solara’s saltwater spool and Sylvestre’s cowboy tub and outdoor soaking tub give the days around Thanksgiving their own pleasures. It’s especially well suited to a multigenerational stay or friends who have become family.

Stardust Luxe — for the people who love to cook

Stardust Luxe’s pool and modern desert home in Yucca Valley

Stardust Luxe makes a holiday centered on food feel particularly inviting. The fully equipped open kitchen includes a six-burner Z-Line gas range, a KitchenAid processor and an ANOVA sous vide. There’s a Jura espresso machine for the morning after, too. Indoor dining and alfresco dining offer a choice of where to settle in for a meal.

The Yucca Valley home sleeps up to eight, with three bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, plus additional sleeping options. The living area looks out over the desert, while the private half-acre backyard has a pool, hot tub, fire pit and hammocks. Cook something ambitious, take a walk into the open land behind the house and come back for another helping.

San Junipero — a smaller table, with a wide-open view

San Junipero is a natural fit for a Thanksgiving gathering of up to six. Its three bedrooms have two king beds and one queen, and the fully equipped kitchen has stainless steel appliances and dining for six. The kitchen, dining and lounge spaces share an open layout with panoramic views, so cooking doesn’t take you away from the company.

Outside, there’s more dining and seating, a barbecue, a container Modpool, a separate hot tub and a propane fire pit. Spend a little time exploring Joshua Tree, then return to an afternoon at home.

The Aerie — long meals and a little friendly competition

The Aerie has the kind of layout that lets a family weekend find its own pace. A fully equipped kitchen connects to indoor dining and the lounge, while a larger covered outdoor table offers another setting for Thanksgiving dinner. The three-bedroom home sleeps up to eight.

Between meals, there’s a bocce court, a yoga patio, outdoor lounge seating and a stargazing moon pad, all framed by boulders and desert views. A pool, hot tub, barbecue and fire pit make it easy to spend much of the weekend outside. Come together for dinner, then choose your own way to enjoy the evening.

Start a desert Thanksgiving tradition

Some of the best holiday memories happen in the hours around the meal: cooking side by side, taking a walk together, pouring one more cup of coffee before everyone heads home. A few days in Joshua Tree give you time for all of it.
