The Best Scenic Drives Near Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree is one of those places where the drive can be as memorable as the destination. The landscape changes quickly, from boulder fields and thick stands of Joshua trees to wide-open desert and mountain views. And you don't need an off-road vehicle or a complicated itinerary to see the best of it!

These are the three drives we recommend most often. Each one works in a regular passenger car, gives you plenty of reasons to stop, and can be combined with coffee, lunch, dinner or an afternoon back at your rental.

1. The Classic Park Drive: West Entrance to North Entrance

For a first visit, this is the route to choose. Pick up coffee at Joshua Tree Coffee Company, enter through the West Entrance and follow Park Boulevard through the heart of Joshua Tree National Park.

Hidden Valley and Cap Rock are easy early stops, followed by the turnoff for Keys View. The overlook adds some extra driving, but the Coachella Valley and mountain views make it worthwhile on a clear day. Back on Park Boulevard, continue toward Jumbo Rocks and Skull Rock before leaving through the North Entrance near Twentynine Palms.

This route works best when you leave room to be spontaneous. Stop when the light is beautiful, take a short walk, have a picnic and skip anything that feels too crowded. If you exit near dinner time, Grnd Sqrl is a fun way to finish the day in Twentynine Palms.

2. The Long Park Drive: Pinto Basin Road

Pinto Basin Road shows you a completely different side of the park. As the road descends from the Mojave Desert into the Colorado Desert, the Joshua trees thin out, the views open up and the plant life changes.

The Cholla Cactus Garden is the best-known stop, especially when the cactus catches the early or late light. Continue toward Cottonwood if you want to experience the full transition, or turn back once you have had enough driving. This is a better choice for a full day than a quick morning outing.

Bring food and water and a full tank of gas. There are no restaurants or gas stations inside the park, and this route covers much more ground than the classic Park Boulevard drive. Check the current park conditions before leaving.

3. The Easy High-Desert Afternoon: Pioneertown Road and Pipes Canyon

Not every beautiful drive needs to be inside the national park. Pioneertown Road climbs out of Yucca Valley through rocky hills and opens onto one of the prettiest stretches of the high desert. It is an easy drive to combine with a walk down Mane Street and a late lunch, dinner or drinks.

A Simple Two-Day Scenic-Drive Plan

On your first morning, take the classic West Entrance to North Entrance route through the park. Give yourself most of the day so you can stop without watching the clock, then have dinner in Twentynine Palms or Joshua Tree.

The next day, keep things lighter. Spend the morning at the house, have lunch in Yucca Valley, then drive Pioneertown Road in the afternoon. Walk Mane Street, stay for dinner or live music if something sounds fun, and head home for stargazing.

A Few Things Before You Go

Download the official park map before entering because cell service is unreliable. Bring water, snacks, sun protection and a layer for cooler or windy overlooks. Use established pullouts for photographs and avoid stopping in the roadway or driving onto fragile desert ground.

We recommend sticking to paved roads unless you have the right vehicle and real desert-driving experience. Backcountry road conditions can change quickly after rain or wind, and an SUV alone does not make every route appropriate.
